India got off to a cracking start in their bid to clinch the ongoing three-match series against Australia. Riding on blistering centuries from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, India are currently dominating the second ODI at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24.

Both teams had unexpected omissions: India without their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Australia without their skipper Pat Cummins. Steve Smith, who took charge of the Australian captaincy, decided to bowl first on a nice wicket considering the due factor. Josh Hazlewood gave an early breakthrough for the visitors by dismissing Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply in the fourth over. However, what followed surely made Smith regret sending India to bat first.

Opener Gill took time to get his eye in, but Iyer came in with good intent and started attacking from the word go. It's not often we see Gill taking the backseat and someone like Iyer scoring rapidly with effortless flicks and superb cover drives. However, the young player could not hold on to his aggressive playing style field for long. He teamed up with Iyer to take on the Australian bowlers without any mercy.

No stopping Gill and Iyerย

Both were in the race for half-centuries and it was Gill who achieved the feat first with a six off the 37th ball. Iyer didn't give up either and two overs later, he completed his fifty with a six off the 41st delivery. There was no stopping the duo and the onslaught continued with sixes and fours all over the park. While Australians were searching for a wicket to get back on track, Iyer and Gill started the race to complete their centuries.

This time Iyer leapfrogged his partner and completed the landmark with a single in the 30th over. The 28-year-old got a lifeline in the next over as Sean Abbott's outstanding catch touched the ground, but his second chance ended in just two balls due to a mistimed shot. The story was no different for Gill, who completed his sixth ODI hundred off 92 balls. The 24-year-old departed for 104 after two overs with the scoreboard reading 243-4 in 34.5 overs.
