Kane Williamson will likely be the best batsman in New Zealand by the time he decides to retire from the game. That opinion was shared even by Martin Crowe. But he might also become one of the internationally adored characters in the game. His exceptional talent includes the rare Non-Asian skill to play quality spin along with being skilled enough against fast bowling.
On August 8, 2023, the star New Zealand batter turned 33 and there were numerous fans who turned up in huge numbers on various social media platforms to wish the batting maestro on this special occasion. One of the most decorated players in the modern era, the Kiwi white-ball skipper still has a lot to offer in what is predicted to be the latter stages of his illustrious career.
Williamson guided his group to the 2019 ODI World Cup final, where they narrowly lost to England. The star New Zealand batter has guided New Zealand to the 2021 T20 World Cup final as well as the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) final in the shortest format.
The 33-year-old has played in more than 300 matches in all formats and is very close to 300 in Tests and T20 Internationals. Both his captaincy and his batting over the years have benefited greatly from his composure and capacity for pressure. The right-hand batter has by far scored 8124 runs in 94 Test matches that he has played for the nation with the help of 28 centuries, whereas as far as ODI Cricket is considered, the prolific batter has scored 6555 runs in 161 innings with 13 centuries to his name.
Williamson is not right at the level that he is to perform internationally: New Zealand Coach
"It's nice to see him with a bat in his hand and hitting the balls again, albeit it's not right at the level that he is to perform internationally," commented Stead, New Zealand's head coach.
The Kiwi star had to be carried off the field during the IPL game, was disqualified from the competition, and his participation in the 2023 ODI World Cup was uncertain. Williamson had surgery in New Zealand in April, and reports indicated that if he was unable to participate in the World Cup in October-November, he would still travel with the team as a mentor.
Williamson had not given up on playing in the World Cup, it was revealed in June. There is still a remote possibility that he will recuperate in time for the competition, which begins on October 5 in Ahmedabad with New Zealand taking on England.
