In the first ODI between India and Australia in Mohali, the home team won the toss and elected to bowl first. For the first two games, the Men In Blue had rested some of their main players. On the other hand, the Aussies didn't have the likes of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood to play with. Meanwhile, in the game, the Yellow Brigade had a poor start as Mitchell Marsh was removed by Mohammed Shami.

India would have gotten the wicket of David Warner in his 20s if not for Shreyas Iyer dropping a sitter. The former went to score a fifty and put together 94 runs for the second wicket. Warner tried to play a slog sweep against Ravindra Jadeja but was caught at long-on by Shubman Gill. Shami returned for the second spell a few overs later and cleaned up Steve Smith.

After the wickets of Warner and Smith, Australia found themselves in a difficult situation as Cameron Green found it tough to get going. He ended up getting only 31 off 52 balls. Shami and Bumrah ensured that the opposition didn't get past 290-plus runs. The former took his maiden ODI five-wicket haul and became the first Indian pacer in 16 years to take a fifer at home.

With this, the five-time ODI World Cup winners were bowled out for 276 runs.

India ended up chasing the target rather easily

In reply, the home team had a dream start as Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad put together 142 runs in just 21.4 overs. The latter fell to Adam Zampa after scoring 71 off 77 balls. After this, the team was reduced to 185/4 and needed a partnership to get home.

At this stage, skipper KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav put together 80 runs for the fifth wicket. This partnership ensured the team's win with the latter hitting his first ODI fifty. On the other hand, Rahul scored an unbeaten 58 runs and took the team home with eight balls left and five wickets left.
