Dindigul Dragons and Lyca Kovai Kings clashed against each other in the 16th match of the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2023 at the SCF cricket ground, Salen on Sunday, June 25. The Dragons won the toss and opted to bowl first but they faced an embarrassing 59-run loss.

Meanwhile, Shahrukh Khan, the captain of Kovai, who didn't even bowl an over during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, became the leading wicket-taker in the league after the 16th game by picking up 9 wickets in just 5 games. Shahrukh knows his ability to bowl and he gave himself this opportunity which worked for him.

However, in 14 IPL 2023 games for Punjab Kings (PBKS), the 28-year-old all-rounder did not get to bowl even once. He only had one opportunity to bat, and that too down the order as a finisher. But in the TNPL, he demonstrated his bowling prowess and rose to the top two bowlers in the competition. He had a purple cap on his head and had taken two wickets against the Dragons, but it was short-lived after P Bhuvaneswaran surpassed him by taking 10 wickets later the same night.

We bowled some bad balls: Ravichandran Ashwin

It will be interesting to see if PBKS’ skipper Shikhar Dhawan gives him the opportunity to bowl in the upcoming IPL season. Meanwhile, talking about the match, asked to bat first, Kovai achieved a monumental total of 206 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. Their middle-order batter Sai Sudarshan was the highest scorer for the team as he scored 83 runs off just 41 balls.

Chasing the target, the Dragons had a horrible start as they lost their 5 wickets on the score of just 51 runs. Opener Shivam Singh was the only batter who played well and scored 61 runs off just 42 deliveries. However, no other batter could provide anything special to the team and were bundled out on just 147 runs. Skipper Ravichandran Ashwin talked about their loss in the post-match presentation.

“The first over went for 14 runs and everything went downhill after that. We were outbatted, outbowled and outfield today. They went hard initially. We bowled some bad balls. We had a bad day. We lost wickets early. Can work on that.”
