Chennai Super Kings were extremely efficient as they beat the Delhi Capitals by 27 runs in their Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, May 10.

Having won the toss and electing to bat first, Chennai got off to a sluggish start as their normally free-stroking openers struggled to come to terms with a slow pitch. Devon Conway fell in the fifth over, with Ruturaj Gaikwad following soon after as Chennai emerged from a tricky powerplay. Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Due tried to give the scoring a push but both fell after a few big blows as the Delhi bowling attack kept the Chennai batters in check.

The veteran core of Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, and MS Dhoni contributed with a few big hits towards the end of the innings but no Chennai batter crossed 25 as the yellow-clad side posted 167/8 in their innings. For Delhi, Axar Patel and Mitchell Marsh shone with the ball - while Axar got rid of both openers and took 2/27 in his four overs, Marsh finished with 3/18 in his three overs, taking two in an economical final over.

Delhiโ€™s innings got off to a terrible start as captain David Warner was sent packing for a second-ball duck. Phil Salt followed Warner back to the pavilion in the third over before a terrible mix-up in the middle saw Mitchell Marsh run out in the fourth over.

Manish Pandey and Rilee Rossouw steadied the ship to an extent, but the ever-increasing scoring rate eventually got the best of them. Pandey was dismissed for 27 in the 13th over before Rossouw fell for 35 in the 15th. In the end, Delhi limped to 140/8 in their 20 overs, falling significantly before the finish line.

For Chennai, Matheesha Pathirana took 3/37 in his four overs, ably supported by Deepak Chahar, who took two, and Jadeja, who took 1/19 in his four-over spell. The result sees Chennai strengthen their grip on second place in the IPL table while their opponents Delhi remain rooted to the bottom of the table.ย
