Celebrities all over the world deal with the problem of dishonest brands using their names, faces, and even voice to promote their products for personal gain, especially in today’s era of accessibility due to social media.

Recently, it was legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar that got dragged into a similar case and has had to lodge a police complaint to take action against such brands. Media reports suggest that Tendulkar’s personal assistant came across an oil company on Facebook that was using his picture in their advertisements, claiming that their products were endorsed by the cricketer. While similar advertisements were also found on Instagram, a drug company has also come under the spotlight for using Tendulkar’s image without permission.

Tendulkar took to social media to explain the situation, posting a statement by SRT Sports Management along with a few lines from himself. “Access to trustworthy products is essential. Use the platform's reporting and blocking tools to keep our communities safe. Let's be proactive in creating a safer online environment,” he said.

As a result, a case has been registered by the Cyber Cell of the Mumbai Police against unidentified people under sections 426, 465, and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including cheating, forgery, and other relevant sections of the IT Act, and an investigation into the matter has also begun.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Tendulkar has found himself in a situation where his image is being misused by unscrupulous brands. In 2020, Tendulkar’s team released a statement about their intention of taking legal action against companies and individuals who used his name or likeness for commercial purposes without his permission. At the time, Tendulkar had lodged a case against a casino in Goa for using a morphed photo of him in promotional material.

Tendulkar is currently involved in the Indian Premier League in an official capacity as a mentor with the high-flying Mumbai Indians and was at the Wankhede Stadium enjoying Suryakumar Yadav’s blistering century in Mumbai’s win over Gujarat Titans on Friday, May 12.
