Even ardent fans of Test cricket will admit that keeping up with every bit of the action on all five days can be a task. As it turns out, sometimes even the cricketers involved in the game can find themselves wandering off into their own world as the action (slowly) unfolds out in the middle.

This was showcased by Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne in the ongoing World Test Championship final being played at The Oval between Australia and India. With Australia starting their second innings after taking a sizeable first-innings lead, Labuschagne allowed himself a few moments of relaxation in the pavillion and was seen apparently dozing off as the Australian openers battled it out in the middle.

However, Labuschagne has since shed some light on the incident and provided clarification. He revealed that he was just resting his eyes between balls and relaxing, adding that watching the game all the time just wasn't feasible. He went on to say that grabbing those precious moments of rest proved to be vital as they were few and far between when he was out in the middle, especially when facing a particularly fiery spell from Mohammad Siraj.

Labuschagne had a few difficult moments out in the middle in the second innings as the Indian pacers got a few balls to rear up off the surface and rap him on the gloves. However, the batter displayed great tenacity and battled through the pain and discomfort.

Whatever Labuschagne's preparation was for the second innings, it paid off as he remained unbeaten at stumps on the third day of play. Labuschagne battled it out to be not out on 41 off 118 balls as Australia ended the day on 123/4 with a commanding lead of 296 runs.Β

Labuschagne is joined at the crease by Cameron Green, unbeaten on 7 off 27 balls. He will be hoping to convert this start into a big innings on Day 4, while India will view him as the key wicket to get to start Day 4.
