The second-string New Zealand side hosted the Sri Lankan team in the first T20I of their three-match series. Eden Park in Auckland hosted the match, and given the short boundaries at the venue, plenty of runs were scored in the encounter.

The Kiwis won the toss and decided to bowl first, and the decision worked in their favour to some extent. They got three wickets in the powerplay but gave up 65 runs. Kusal Mendis played a cameo of 25 runs in just 9 balls, but it was Kusal Parrera who kept Sri Lanka's ship steady.

He held his ground despite a few wickets falling at one end. His 103-run partnership with Charith Asalanka aided his progress along the way. Perera scored 53 runs in 45 balls, while Asalanka scored 67 runs in 41 balls. In the end, Wanindu Hasaranga's 21-run cameo in 11 balls helped them post a massive total of 193/5.

The home team's chases did not start well, as they lost both of their openers within the first seven balls. However, Tom Latham and Daryll Mitchell's 66-run partnership got things back on track. The former, on the other hand, did not last long, being bowled out by Pramod Madushan in the eighth over.

Mark Chapman also made a brief appearance of 33 runs in 23 balls, while Mitchell (66 runs in 44 balls) raced to his half-century. After their wickets, New Zealand lost track and crumbled to 184/8 in 19.1 overs. Finally, with seven needed on the final balls, Ish Sodhi held his nerve to hit a six and send the game into extra time.

The visitors took advantage of the super over, as Maheesh Theekshana conceded only 8 runs, allowing James Neesham and Mark Chapman to score only one boundary. After that, it was all Asalanka, who hit a six and a four to seal the game for his team. They now lead the series 1-0 thanks to this victory.
