England knocked out

England came into the tournament as one of the favourites of the World Cup 2023. They were the defending champions and played brilliantly in the bilateral series as well. Ben Stokes also returned to the side taking back his ODI retirement for the tournament. But the aggressive playing style of England did not go in their for as the subcontinent conditions looked for more patience and controlled cricket.

The Three Lions achieved the lowest point of their ODI World Cup history when they lost to Afghanistan. They got knocked out of the tournament quite early stages and could only win three games losing 6 of them. Jos Buttler's side did qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025 as they finished 7th in the points table.

4. South Africa again lost in the semi-finals

South Africa loses in semi-final

South Africa performed brilliantly in the 2023 World Cup. After their poor show in the 2019 World Cup where they failed to qualify for knockouts. Temba Bavuma's side started off the campaign with a big win as they were scoring almost 350 plus runs in every match while batting first.

Till the knockouts they only lost two games against Netherlands and India respectively. In the other seven group-stage matches, they played an explosive brand of cricket throughout the whole tournament. They had the chance of making it to the final for the first time in World Cup history but yet again they choked in the semi-finals against the Aussies as they lost the match by 3 wickets.

Pakistan performed poorly in the ODI World Cup 2023 as they failed to qualify for the knockouts for the second consecutive edition. Babar Azam's side started the campaign well winning two matches then four consecutive match losses pushed them back and they never came out of that.

One of the most heartbreaking moments was when skipper Babar Azam was shocked and disheartened after the loss against Afghanistan. The Afghans chased down the target of 283 with eight wickets in hand.

2. Kane Williamson's heartbroken after New Zealand's semi-final loss

Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson has been the backbone of the New Zealand side and was out in the first few games of the tournament. The Kiwis did not let them feel his absence from the team. Rachin Ravindra performed superbly in the tournament scoring three centuries. Williamson who was part of the two final losses of 2015 and 2019, is one of the unluckiest men on the planet of not winning the World Cup.

He was having a heartbreaking smile in the post-match press conference when the Black Caps lost in the semi-final against India. The batter played a knock of 69 runs along with Daryl Mitchell scoring 132 runs but both the batters were not being able to chase down the mammoth target of 398 runs.

The 36-year-old opener made fantastic bowling changes which proved to be the match-winning changes in the competition. He left the field in the final with teary eyes when India lost against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
