Afghanistan created history and achieved several milestones by beating Pakistan in the ODI World Cup 2023. In challenging conditions to play in MA Chidambaram stadium in Chennai, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets to script records in the ODI World Cup. For the first time in the history of the World Cup, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan. For the first time in the ODI World Cup, Afghanistan won two matches in the same tournament.
Afghanistan won just the third match in the ODI World Cup in their history. But both their wins have come against strong teams like England and Pakistan. After being asked to bowl first, Afghanistan conceded 282 runs against Pakistan. On a wicket like Chennai, the target was probably above par. In the last few overs of the game, Pakistan scored a lot. But it was not enough.
Abdullah Shafique and Imam-Ul-Haq gave a good start for Pakistan. Babar Azam continued the good start. Shafique and Azam scored fifty for Pakistan. But the Afghanistan bowlers kept on chipping in with wickets every now and then. Due to some good contributions from the duo of Shadab Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed down the order, Pakistan got a good total on the board.
Afghanistan openers seal the game against Pakistan with contrasting approaches
Chasing 283, Afghanistan went bonkers at the top. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was so brilliant at the top. Along with Ibrahim Zadran, he played a fine hand to give a brilliant start to Afghanistan. The opening duo took the game away from Pakistan in the first ten overs. The young openers mentally demoralised the Pakistan attack and almost sealed the chase for their team.
Pakistan came back with some crucial wickets. But their fielding was poor, which further did not help their cause. The spinners did not have a good day for Pakistan. They could not pick a wicket on spin-friendly conditions. Only Shaheen and Hasan Ali claimed wickets for Pakistan. The duo of Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi took Afghanistan home, as they won the match comfortably by 8 wickets.
