The ODI World Cup 2023 has begun in style. Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 6 wickets in the third match of the marquee event. Batting first, the Afghans got to a good start with openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanulla Gurbaz as they scored almost 5 runs per over. Afghanistan never looked into the game after their openers were back in the pavilion. They got bundled out for just 156 runs in 37.2 overs. No other batters could convert their start to a big score.

This is Afghanistan's 13th consecutive loss in the mega event from 2015. Afghanistan are a formidable side with a mixture of experience and young blood in their team. But the World Cup pressure has made them struggle again and again. After starting the first inning so well they could not give them a chance to win after collapsing in the middle overs.

Skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz webbed the Afghan batters in their spin. As they had no answer to their bowling. Shakib changed the momentum with two quick wickets of Zadran and Rahmat Shah. From there the Afghans never recovered and being 83/1 they collapsed to 156/10.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz's all-round show gave Bangladesh the first win of the World Cup 2023

Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and elected to field first. This decision of the veteran allrounder did not go his way when the openers of Afghanistan Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmannullah Gurbaz started the innings in a quick manner. The former was dismissed for 22 runs off 25 balls by the Bangladesh skipper. Gurbaz was looking in full flow with the bat but a slower ball from Mustafizur Rahman was all enough to dismiss the batter as he returned after scoring 47 runs in 62 balls. After Gurbaz's wicket, no other batters could score a past 25 runs and they were bundled for 156 runs. Mehidy and Shakib were the pick of the bowlers as both spinners picked three wickets each.

In response, both openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das were back to the pavilion after 27 runs. Mehidy Hasan and Najimul Hasan Shanto scored their fifties and made sure that the Bangla Tigers were in a comfortable position to win the match. The former scored 57 runs off 73 deliveries and Shanto 59 runs and was unbeaten till the end alongside wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. They won the match by 6 wickets with 15.2 overs left.
