India beat Sri Lanka by 302 runs in the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The Men in Blue became the first side, to qualify for the semi-final of the tournament. The sensational bowling display from the Indian pacers made the Lankan batting lineup look helpless against them. This is the biggest win against Sri Lanka in the history of the ODI World Cup.
After being invited to bat first, the Men in Blue lost their skipper early on in the innings. But after that, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill built the innings and made an 189-run partnership between them. They posted a huge total of 357 runs. Both the batters missed out on their century. Shreyas Iyer also scored a fifty and some runs by Ravindra Jadeja made sure they go past 350 runs.
Kohli achieved some milestones during the game, as he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most 1000 runs in a calendar year. The latter scored 7 times and Kohli made it 8 times against the Islanders. He also became the first batter with the most 50-plus score as a non-opener.
Indian bowlers outclass Sri Lanka
Kohli and Gill played brilliantly after the wicket of Rohit. They built a partnership of 189 runs for the second wicket. The latter was dismissed after scoring 92 runs and missed out on a well-deserved hundred. The former India skipper was also dismissed on 88 runs and was disappointed after his wicket as well. Iyer also scored a quickfire, 82 runs off 55 deliveries, and smashed the longest six of the tournament of 106m. Some contributions from Jadeja made sure they posted a target of 358 runs for their opponents.
In response, the Indian bowlers gave no clue to the Sri Lankan batters. Bumrah struck on the very first ball of the innings. A sensational spell from Siraj where he picked three wickets created havoc for the batters. Shami came in the first change and picked five wickets and became the bowler to take most five wickets for Undia, in ODI. He was named the Man of the Match as the Islanders were bowled out for 55 runs.
