The defending champions England are currently playing Bangladesh in the seventh match of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala. Dawid Malan scored a brilliant hundred in the ongoing match of the marquee event. The left-handed opener has performed brilliantly in the second match for England. On the other hand, former England skipper Joe Root has added yet another achievement to his already illustrious career. The right-handed batter has now become England’s all-time leading run-scorer in ODI World Cup.

Root achieved this feat while playing in the ongoing match against Bangladesh in the mega event. The record was previously held by former England opener Graham Gooch. The English great scored 897 runs in 21 World Cup matches, hitting one century and eight half-centuries. Now Root took just 19 innings to surpass his record. He now has 917 runs in 19 ODI World Cup games. This might be the last World Cup that the England batter would play in his career.

Root has scored 82 runs off 68 deliveries. He stitched a partnership with Malan of 151 runs. England opener Jonny Bairstow also scored a fifty, and Malan scored 140 runs off 107 balls. With England's top order firing the defending champions have posted a total of 364/9 in their 50 overs.

Joe Root's record at the World Cup

In his first World Cup, which was back in 2015 Root had scored 202 runs in 6 games with the help of one century. In the previous edition which was 2019, he scored a record 556 runs in 11 games including a couple of centuries and three half-centuries as England won the World Cup for the first time against New Zealand by the barest of margin, on boundary count.

Root in this edition started well in the first match against New Zealand. The batter scored 77 runs although England suffered a heavy 9-wicket loss against New Zealand. England skipper Jos Buttler ahead of the match cricticised the ground conditions of Dharamshala calling it 'poor'.
