Sri Lanka is playing Pakistan in their second ODI World Cup 2023 match. Dasun Shanka won the toss and chose to bat first at Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Kusal Perera was the first wicket to fall, as the opener returned to the pavilion without scoring. Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka put on a 107-run stand before the latter was dismissed by Shadab Khan after 51 runs. Mendis has been in great form in 2023, and the batter has also shown his class in the Asia Cup.
Mendis produced a stunning century off 65 balls against Pakistan in the ongoing edition of the marquee tournament on Tuesday. This is his first century in a World Cup, and his third hundred in one-day internationals overall. It is the fastest century by a Sri Lankan batter in the men's ODI World Cup. Previously Kumar Sangakkara hit a 70-ball 117 runs against England in the 2015 World Cup in Australia.
The 28-year-old batter struck 13 fours and four sixes on his way to the century. Mendis was eventually dismissed after scoring 122 runs off 77 deliveries, hitting 14 fours and 6 sixes. He was dropped by Pakistani opener Imam-ul-Haq in the powerplay which proved costly for the Men in Green side.
Sri Lanka eye victory against Pakistan
Dasun Shanaka's team suffered a crushing defeat against South Africa. The Proteas scored 428/5 in Delhi's Arun Jaitely stadium, the highest total in ODI World Cup history. Sri Lanka has not won against Pakistan in the main event, although they can end the jinx if they post a good total on the board on Tuesday.
Skipper Dasun Shanaka would like his men to win this match in order to gain some momentum in the tournament. They are the dark horse in the mega event and have a good record while playing in the subcontinent. In 1996 they won their first and only World Cup in the subcontinent when it was hosted by India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
