South Africa beat Afghanistan by five wickets in the ODI World Cup 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Afghanistan has performed really well in the tournament as they have won 4 matches in the event and have finished the group stages with 8 points. They had the chance to qualify for the semi-final but after losing their game against Australia they lost their momentum and lost the final game of the group stage as well. They have also made history after securing their place for their first-ever Champions Trophy in 2025. 

Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first. The opener Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz started off well. But the latter was the first one to be dismissed as Keshav Maharaj's dream World Cup run continues. He bowled really well at the Narendra Modi Stadium, on Friday. They kept on losing wickets after that and were struggling at one stage 160/7. 

Azmatullah Omarzarai scored a brilliant half-century and led his team to a go past 200 runs. Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers for his side as the pacer has performed brilliantly in the tournament so far. Lungi Ngidi underperformed in the game. 

South Africa chases with ease

The openers of Afghans built a 41-run stand for the first wicket. But after the wicket of Gurbaz wickets kept on falling as no batter was able to score runs against the Proteas. They were 94/4. But Azmat Omarzarai scored a brilliant 97 runs and was unbeaten till the end helping them score 244 runs in their 50 overs. He was supported by Noor Ahmed towards the end of the innings who scored valuable 26 runs. 

In response, Temba Bavuma's side started off well. With Quinton de Kock and Bavuma stitched a stand of 64 runs for the first wicket. The openers were back in the pavilion quickly they struggled to score runs. But Rassie van der Dussen played yet another important knock of 76 runs and took his team through.
