South Africa beat Pakistan by one wicket, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Friday. This is South Africa's first win while chasing in the tournament. Babar Azam won the toss and elected to bat first both teams made changes with Pakistan bringing in Mohammad Nawaz, and, Mohammad Wasim Jr. The Proteas made three changes with skipper Temba Bavuma, Tabriz Shamsi, and Lungi Ngidi brought back for Kagiso Rabada, Reeza Hendricks, and Lizaad Williams.
The Pakistani openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq gave them a decent start with the former being dismissed by Marco Jensen. They lost both their openers inside the first powerplay and were struggling at 38-2 at one stage. Skipper Babar and wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan built a stand of 48 runs.
Shamsi who was making a comeback bowled brilliantly and was the pick of the bowlers for his side and Jensen gave the Proteas the early breakthroughs. During the first innings the pacer and Rizwan had some heated exchange while the latter missed the ball in the 7th over of the game.
Aiden Markram shines for Proteas
The Pakistan openers were looking in good touch but struggled against Jensen's short ball. Shafique was the first one to be back in the dugout after scoring 9 runs off 17 deliveries. Imam was the next to be dismissed for 12 runs. Babar and Rizwan stitched a partnership of 48 runs before the latter one dismissed for 31 runs. He reached 2000 runs in ODI cricket. The former scored a fifty and was back to the pavilion the next ball. Saud Shakeel and Shadab Khan built an 84-run stand and made sure they scored past 250. Shakeel scored a run-a-ball 52 runs and the latter scored 43 runs off 36 balls. Shamsi picked up 4 wickets in his 10 overs spell.
In reply, Bavuma and Quinton de Kock were off to a flyer. They were scoring quick runs before the latter was dismissed by Shaheen Shah Afridi for 24 runs. Afridi made a comeback and picked up two wickets and dismissed well-set Aiden Markram who played a sensational knock of 91 runs, the Proteas won the game by one wicket
