Afghanistan came to Chennai after having beaten England in their last game by 69 runs. New Zealand were the next opponents and the Kiwis were the high fliers of the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign.

The game which began with a huge promise on Wednesday ended with a one-sided result. The Kiwis beat the Afghans by a massive margin of 149 runs to win their 4th game in a row. This win also meant that New Zealand would go past India to take the number 1 spot in the points table.

Tom Latham was back as the skipper as he replaced Kane Williamson who suffered an injury in the previous game against Bangladesh. Hasmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose to field. It was a hot and humid day in Chennai as the Kiwis replaced Williamson with Will Young.

New Zealand bowlers fire their team to a huge win –

Chasing 289 to win, Rahmanullah Gurbaz failed to fire with the bat as he was out for 11. Ibrahim Zadran also fell cheaply as he fell to Boult for just 14 runs. Apart from Rahmat Shah with 36 and 27 from Azmatullah none of the Afghan batters did well with the bat.

Even the regularly free-scoring and consistent lower order for Afghanistan failed to fire with the bat. Mitchell Santner has been the best bowler from New Zealand and he re-affirmed this tag with yet another 3 wicket haul on Wednesday. Lockie Ferguson also picked three wickets to dent the Afghan team.

Earlier in the day, Will Young scored his second 50 of the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. The right-handed batter scored 54 runs from 64 balls with the help of 4 fours and 3 sixes. Rachin Ravindra batted well to score 41-ball 32 runs with 2 fours and a six.

After three quick wickets fell for just 1 run, Glenn Phillips and Tom Latham combined forces. The pair scored 144 runs for the 5th wicket with Phillip scoring 71 runs which was the top score. Tom Latham scored 68 runs playing some delightful shots to enthrall the crowds.
