Australia made a terrific comeback in the match against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023. Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting surface in Lucknow. The decision of Mendis was proven right, as the opening duo of Sri Lanka framed a good partnership for the first wicket. The duo was on song right from the beginning.
Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera scored 125 runs for the first wicket. The right-left duo worked well for Sri Lanka, as the Australian bowlers found it hard to bowl for them. Despite the efforts of the Australian bowlers, the Sri Lankan duo batted well and got fifty for themselves. Nissanka scored 61 runs in 67 balls, while Perera scored 78 runs in 82 balls.
What followed was a stunning collapse from Sri Lanka. Nissanka lost his wicket, which led to an incredible collapse. The Sri Lankan opener was undone by Pat Cummins. David Warner claimed a fantastic catch to dismiss Nissanka. In walked Mendis, one of the best batters of the tournament. The innings of Sri Lanka were to get better at the stage. What happened though, was the complete opposite.
Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc, and Pat Cummins run through the Sri Lankan batting lineup
Once the partnership was broken, Sri Lanka crumbled. Perera was undone against the run of play. Mendis was dismissed by a stunning catch from Warner. Other middle and lower-middle-order batters returned to the pavilion without making any impact. Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya De Silva, and Dunith Wellalage returned top pavilion with single-digit scores.
Charith Asalanka tried his best to revive the innings of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, it could not happen. In the end, Sri Lanka was dismissed for just 209 runs. The Asia Cup finalists lost their last 9 wickets for just 52 runs. For Australia, Zampa was brilliant with the ball, as he claimed 4 wickets. Starc and Cummins claimed 2 wickets each. Maxwell claimed a wicket as well. From a good situation at one stage, Sri Lanka collapsed like a pack of cards.

For some reason, most of the teams don't look World Cup ready in this edition. Contributions from barely 4-5 players does not work in ODI cricket, you need the whole team to put their hands up.
