India vs Pakistan is less than 24 hours away. The two teams and their respective fans are bubbling up for the mega match on Saturday, October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. Star India opener Shubman Gill missed the first two matches of the ODI World Cup 2023 as the batter was suffering from dengue. But ahead of the marquee match, the batter has already travelled to Ahmedabad, and on Thursday, he had a one-hour batting session as well.
There were rumours about whether the batter would be participating in the match against Pakistan or not. But Team India skipper Rohit Sharma ahead of the match, confirmed that Gill is fit enough for the game but management will take a call on his availability on the match day. The 24-year-old batter has been in sensational form in 2023. Gill has scored a total of 1,230 runs in just 20 ODIs with an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of just above 105, making him the leading run-scorer in this format this year.
The Punjab-born batter has been in great touch as he has scored five centuries in the current year. With that achievement, he joined Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and other Indian legends in the elite list of batsmen with five or more hundreds in a year. He could become the fastest batter to score 2000 runs in ODI cricket if he continues his brilliant form in the marquee tournament.
We'll see tomorrow (Saturday) about that: Rohit Sharma
Rohit said when asked about Gill's health during the pre-match conference, "99 percent he (Gill) will play. We'll see tomorrow (Saturday) about that." The Indian skipper has found back his form and looked in great touch against Afghanistan in Delhi. Rohit scored the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the ODI World Cup history breaking the long-held record of Kapil Dev. He scored the ton in 63 balls.
Previously former India batter Yuvraj Singh said he is hoping Gill will be fit for the Pakistan clash. He said, "Shubham Gill ko maine tagda kar diya hai [I have strengthened Shubham Gill]. I told him that I had played in the World Cup while battling cancer, so I got ready quickly to join the team. Hopefully, he will be ready for the India vs Pakistan game. When you have a fever and dengue it is really tough to play a cricket match and I have experienced that. So I hope that if he is fit then he will definitely play."
There will be a grand pre-match ceremony with Bollywood stars to perform ahead of the match.
