In the fourth match of the World Cup 2023, South Africa faced off against Sri Lanka, at the Arun Jaitely Stadium, Delhi. Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to field first. The decision went right for the Lankan side, as they removed the Protea skipper Temba Bavuma who had to walk back to the pavilion after scoring just 8 runs in the second over. Wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen stitched a 204-run partnership.
Both the batters scored centuries and looked in firm control against the Sri Lanka's bowling department. De Kock smashed a hundred While Van der Dussen also scored a ton. Then came a blistering knock of Aiden Markram who scored the fastest hundred of the ODI World Cup history in just 49 balls.
The three batters completely demolished the Lankan bowlers and posted the highest-ever total in ODI World Cup history. They scored 428/5 runs in their 50 overs. With the batters hitting 45 boundaries and 14 sixes Dasun Shanaka looked clueless and they could not stop the Protea's batting demolition.
Aiden Markram creates a record as South Africa posts a big total
South Africa lost the skipper Bavuma in the very second over. Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen built the innings and changed gears when required with the batters explosive against the Lanka's bowling attack. De Kock who decided to hang his boots in the ODIs scored a 100 in just 84 deliveries and showed his experience of playing in Indian conditions. On the other hand, Rassie played a supportive knock of 108 runs in 110 balls and both the batters looked in control.
Aiden Markram walked into bat in the 31st over and then went on to hit the fastest-ever hundred in a World Cup match. He scored a ton in just 49 deliveries and broke the previous record of Kevin O'Brien who previously scored a hundred while chasing target vs England, Bengaluru in the 2011 World Cup. This is also the first time in the World Cup that 3 batters from a team scored hundreds in an innings.
In response, Sri Lanka lost both their openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera early in the innings. Kusal Mendis returned to the pavilion after scoring 76 runs Charith Asalanka scored 79 runs off 65 balls and Skipper Dasun Shanaka fought till the end but he was dismissed for 68 runs, with no other batters really supporting to chase such a huge target. In the end, the Islanders were bowled out for 326 runs.
