Breaking News: Marathon champion Kelvin Kiptum passes away in tragic car accident

World Athletics is in shock after marathon runner and world record holder Kelvin Kiptum passed away in a tragic car accident on Sunday night in Kenya.

24-year-old Kelvin Kiptum who is one of the best Marathon runners has tragically died. The cause of death is a car accident which took place on Sunday. The entire athletics world is in deep shock at the latest turn of events. 

Sebastian Coe who is the president of the Athletics World has shared his shock via a statement. It is shocking news as the young runner was considered a legend in the making in long-distance running. 

The accident occurred on Sunday at 11 PM when Kiptum lost control of his car. According to many who had witnessed the accident it was the young runner who was driving the car. His coach Gervais Hakizimana who was travelling with him also lost his life. There was a third passenger who as per news reports was suffering from serious injuries.

Late on Sunday night, the world of sports lost a great young talent in Kelvin Kiptum. The 24-year-old Kenyan tragically passed away after his car met with an accident. The young man is already married and is a father of two. Kelvin Kiptum became a huge hit after he ran an impeccable race to win the London Marathon. This was followed by a world record win late last year during the Chicago Marathon. The next second-placed runner was behind him by nearly over three minutes. 

Sebastian Coe released a statement mourning the death of Kelvin Kiptum. “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervai Hakizimana. On behalf of all world athletics, we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates, and the Kenyan nation”

The statement also read “It was only earlier this week in Chicago, the place where Kelvin set his extraordinary marathon World Record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time. An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him deeply”

The official statement of the police read “This was a self-involved accident where one Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, was driving his vehicle with two passengers. Kiptum and Hakizimana died on the spot while the third person was rushed to Racecourse Hospital in Eldoret”
