Former Sri Lanka pacer Chaminda Vass believes Shreyas Iyer can be the future Test captain of the Indian team. In the words of Vaas, Iyer could be "the best captain". The former pacer also mentioned that Iyer has scored a hundred in his Test debut. The pacer even stated he is the best candidate to handle the Indian Team in future.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma, India's current skipper, ended his Test century drought and achieved his tenth century in the longer format in the opening Test of the two-match series against the Windies. Apart from his century, Rohit was the series' second-highest run-scorer, with 240 runs scored in three innings. Vaas believes the Indian skipper is doing his job well.

Shreyas Iyer will be the best captain: Chaminda Vaas

The former left-arm Sri Lankan pacer said, "Shreyas Iyer will be the best captain. In his first Test, he scored a hundred and he has good leadership skills. The way I see it, he can handle the team. He will be the best option going forward."

Vaas also stated, "Rohit Sharma has been handling really well. He has experience, he has leadership qualities. As a leader, he has been performing. I don't think the Indian cricket management will think differently. He has a few more years to play for India and he will give everything to Indian cricket."

Meanwhile, the Kolkata Knight Riders captain has been out of the team with an injury. Currently, he is in the last stages of rehabilitation and has been batting at NCA nets. Even if he returns to the field after recuperating from injury, his position in the Test team is not assured. With the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, he needs to fight for a place in the playing XI as the competition has increased.

The Mumbai-born batter has played a total of 10 Test matches for India so far. He collected 666 runs with one century and five fifties. Shreyas, who made his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur in 2021, last played in Test cricket last March against Australia in Ahmedabad.
