Australia and England are currently clashing against each other in the 1st Test match of the Ashesh 2023 series at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Australian team are high on confidence after their recent win against India in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final on June 11 at the Oval.
Meanwhile, the 5th day of the Test is set to have a delayed start due to the rain. The precipitation is as high as 95 per cent. It will be cloudy throughout the day with humidity around 97 per cent and it looks very gloomy out there. If rain doesn't stop the match will end up being a draw. However, if the match resumes, the overcast conditions will help the English bowlers and it will make things more difficult for the Aussie batters.
However, talking about the match, Australia need 174 more to win, but arguably their two best batters Smith and Labuschagne are back in the pavilion. England need 7 wickets with Stuart Broad on a roll at the end of the 4th day. But the pitch is still good to bat, however, the conditions should aid swing bowling which will definitely help the English fast bowlers on Day 5.
A brilliant all-round performance by both teams so far
Earlier, England reached 393-8 in the first innings before making an unexpected declaration. Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, and Zak Crawley were the Three Lions' top performers. Root hit seven fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 118 from 152 balls. Bairstow scored 78 runs off 12 fours.
In response, Australia fell seven short of England's total. The Kangaroos' top performer was Usman Khawaja, who scored 141 runs off 321 balls while hitting 14 fours and three sixes. Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon each took four wickets in the second innings to limit England to 273. However, Australia have already lost 3 wickets while chasing 280 runs. They have Khawaja and night watchman Scott Boland in the middle and the upcoming batters Cameron Green and Alex Carey have the ability to finish the match quickly.
