Ravichandran Ashwin has made a sensational comeback to team India in ODI cricket. He has been brilliant in the two ODIs he played against Australia. In the first ODI, he could only pick up a single wicket though he was economical in that match. In the second one, the veteran off-spinner picked three wickets in India, a 99-run win over the Aussies.
He was added to the ODI squad after 2022. Ashwin has been a regular in test cricket for India over the years. He has been a superb performer with the ball in cricket's longest format of the game. In the 2nd ODI in Indore, he claimed three wickets.
There was a battle to watch in that match with David Warner batted right-handed to Ashwin for one over. In this match, he went on to break an all-time record that was held by the legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble. With the three wickets, Ashwin went to 144 wickets against Australia in international cricket. Earlier the record was from Kumble who has 142 wickets against the five-time World Champions. The 37-year-old spinner has the most wickets in ODI cricket against a single opponent.
I think Ashwin might struggle to make it to the final 15: Aaron Finch
Former Australia World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch believes the performances by Ashwin might not earn him a place in the World Cup. He said, "I think that depends on how they think the surfaces are going to play throughout the country, and by that time, I think the skill in picking a squad for the World Cup is you have to think of the back end. But you can't think too much about it because you have to get there."
"I think he might struggle to make it to the final 15, but as somebody who has played so much cricket, I think the rest of the group that is with the Indian team for this current series against Australia, they could learn so much about big game play. Because Ashwin is somebody that stands up in big games, whether it's a test match or a T20 game, he has done it all throughout his career. So I wouldn't be surprised if he's there at the moment as a mentor around the group, but I don't see him making that last 15, unfortunately."
