After scoring an incredible goal to assist his team in sealing a 2-1 comeback victory over Real Madrid, substitute Franck Kessie enhanced Barcelona's bid for the 27th La Liga championship. By defeating the league's defending champions for the third game in a row, Barcelona significantly increased their chances of winning the league for the first time in four years.
Notably, before El Clasico started, some Barcelona fans got engaged in Camp Nou. It was a special moment in a special match for the couple. However, fans were quick to relate this to the time when Barcelona faced a fund shortage leading to hosting wedding parties and other receptions in their stadium as an alternate source for extra funds.
Barcelona won El Clasico 2-1 with a late winner scored by Franck Kessie
With the victory, Barcelona has opened a 12-point gap over Real Madrid, who are now in second position. At the packed Camp Nou, Barcelona dominated the proceedings the entire time. Raphinha's header in the sixth minute came close to giving the team the lead, but Thibaut Courtois expertly denied it.
"We have to be honest... We never gave up, but we are already four games behind them. Nothing is impossible, but the truth is that it's very difficult (to win the title)," Real Madrid goalkeeper Courtois said post-game.
Vinicius Jr.'s cross bounced off Ronald Araujo and went inside his own goal to give Real Madrid the early advantage. Yet Barcelona swiftly came together and took control of the game. Raphinha's angled shot, and two good shots for Andreas Christiansen had the chance to tie the score, but Courtois stopped them both. Real Madrid's defence failed to clear the ball out of the box just as it appeared they were comfortable with their lead, and Sergi Roberto pounced to score one to Courtois' left.
Barcelona offered numerous opportunities for settling the score. They could have been in serious trouble, but the goal by Marco Asensio, a substitute for Real Madrid, was disallowed. The VAR chalked out Asensio's close-range attempt in the 81st minute because the footage showed that he was just barely offside.
Alejandro Balde sprinted down to pass a cross to Kessie, who was unmarked, as Barcelona kept up their pressure for the winning goal. With an unstoppable goal, the substitute midfielder gave Barcelona a surprising victory.
