Virat Kohli scored his 49th ODI century in the ODI World Cup 2023 game against South Africa at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The batter is also celebrating his birthday. Kohli also joined the list of batters who scored a hundred in an ODI on their birthday and became the third Indian and first to do so in the World Cup. The batter has now tied with great Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI hundreds.
The former India skipper became the 7th batter overall to achieve the milestone of scoring a hundred on birthday. Previously only two batters scored a hundred on their birthday at the mega event New Zealand's Ross Taylor played an unbeaten knock of 131 runs of 14 deliveries against Pakistan at the Pallakele International Stadium in the 2011 World Cup and Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh who 121 runs off 108 balls against Pakistan in the current edition of the tournament.
On Sunday Kohli scored 101 runs off 121 balls at the ground where he made his first ODI century. India posted a total of 326 runs in a tricky wicket. He smashed 10 boundaries in his innings. The stadium roared after the batter reached the milestone. Tendulkar had scored his 15th ODI century in the final of the iconic Coca-Cola Cup on his 25th birthday, and former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya‘s 26th century had come during an Asia Cup clash on his 39th birthday.

Kohli in the game against Sri Lanka reached a new milestone as he became the first batter to score 1000 runs in a calendar year for 8 times. He surpassed the record of Tendulkar who achieved this milestone 7 times in his career. In the game against the Proteas, he took his time on a slow wicket and achieved an unbelievable record.
