Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 21 runs in the Super Fours of Asia Cup 2023. Sadeera Samarawickrama led the way for Sri Lanka as the defending champions scored 257/9 against Bangladesh in the Super 4 clash of Asia Cup 2023 on Saturday. Batting first the co-hosts were struggling in the first few overs as they lost their opener Dimuth Karunaratne for just 18 runs.

Shakib Al Hasan and Co started off decently but collapsed in between. They were 55 for 1 and then rattled to 83 for 4. Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy tried to change the course of the match but were unable to take their team over the finish line but eventually they lost by 21 runs.

Towhid Hridoy's fight goes in vain

Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and elected to bowl first. However, the decision did not go in the way of the Bengal Tigers as they struggled to get wickets in Colombo. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne stitched together an opening stand of 34 runs after being invited to bat first.

Nissanka continued to his purple patch of scoring runs by smashing 40 runs off 60 balls. Kusal Mendis also continued his glorious form with the bat. He smashed a fifty and was looking fine but he failed to capitalise on the knock and post a big score.

After Mendis and Charith Asalanka departed, Samarawickrama stitched a partnership with captain Dasun Shanaka. His stellar knock of 93 runs off 72 balls led the Lankans to a score of 257/8. Hasan Mahmud delivered another masterclass, as he picked up three wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam also chipped in with two wickets each.

In reply, Bangladesh got off to a decent start with openers Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz combining for a 55-run partnership, before Miraz was eventually dismissed by captain Dasun Shanaka for 28 runs. After that, no batter really survived and from 55-1, they collapsed to 83-4.  Towhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim built a decent partnership of 50 runs in 84 balls. Mushfiqur was unable to convert his start and was out for 29 runs off 48 balls. Hridoy was eventually out when the Tigers required 61 runs off 40 balls. He scored 82 runs off 97 balls, hitting 7 fours and one six.
