The Indian squad led by Rohit Sharma for the upcoming tour of the West Indies, where the team is scheduled to play two Test matches, was released by the Indian Cricket Board’s selection committee on Friday afternoon. Shiv Sunder Das who serves as the body's interim chairman chose the team which is full of youth and experience.
While young players, notably Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Mukesh Kumar received their first call-ups, Sarfaraz Khan's ignorance once again did not sit well with Indian cricket fans or the players themselves. Some of the experts of the game also gave their opinion on this snub. A day after being passed over for the third occasion in 2023, the Indian Cricket Board selectors received an explosive response from the Mumbai batter.
Sarfaraz Khan's statistics for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy
Sarfaraz Khan hasn't exactly been piling up runs off late and had a dismal season in the 2023 Indian Premier League season where he hardly played a few games. He had crushed 928 runs at an enormous average of 154 during the 2019–20 season of the Ranji Trophy. He scored 982 runs with an average of 122.75 in the following season, followed by a 556-run campaign in 2022/23 in which he smashed three hundreds. He has played 35 times and managed 3505 runs for an overall average of 79.65 and 13 tonnes.
Despite the impressive figures, Sarfaraz did not make the Indian Test team's final selection. He almost certainly would have made the team for the trip to Bangladesh this past year, however, he was put on hold despite the fact that he acknowledged the selectors had spoken with him. But a similar incident also occurred in 2023, when he was disqualified from the Border-Gavaskar series, the World T20 Championship final, and subsequently suffered a similar destiny for the West Indies series, which starts on July 12.
Sarfaraz Khan sent a sharp statement to the selectors on Friday by posting a video of his Ranji Trophy season highlights in a story on Instagram in retaliation for the rejection.
