The rivalry between Chennai and Kolkata may not be talked-about much now but there used to be a time when they were fierce rivals on the field. Under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir, Kolkata challenged Chennai's supremacy. Gambhir's tactics to put pressure on MS Dhoni are still quite famous.
The two teams locked horns in the final of the 2012 tournament and the Gambhir-led team lifted the trophy by chasing down the huge target of 191. They emulated their success in 2014 and defeated Punjab in the final.
While Gambhir has now retired from the cash-rich league, Dhoni continues to lead Chennai and will be in action in the upcoming season in 2023. Dhoni's batting skills can put pressure on any bowler and the opposition's dug-out is often under pressure when the Chennai captain bats.
Going into the auction, Kolkata have a purse of Rs 7.05 crore. Shreyas Iyer is confirmed to lead the team once again. They failed to qualify for the 2nd round of IPL 2022. Chennai have a purse of Rs 20.45 crore going into the mini-auction. They also failed to go past the league stage round and crashed out early for the 2nd time in history.
Chennai announced its retention list for the 2023 season on November 15. The four-time champions released quite a few T20 specialists which included Dwayne Bravo, Robin Uthappa, and Chris Jordan. However, they retained the prolific all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. It remains to be seen if Thalaivar can end his glorious career on a high.
