In the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 game between Bangladesh and Afghanistan, Najmul Hossain Shanto extended his good form with the bat. His side, Bangladesh is playing a must-win game in the tournament after starting with a loss against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, in the game, the three-time finalists, Bangladesh Tigers won the toss and elected to bat first on a hot day in Lahore.

They had a decent start as Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraj put together 60 runs in 10 overs. The latter opened the batting for his side after a long time. Naim (28) got a start but was removed by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. In the 11th over, Towhid Hridoy (0) bagged a silver duck as he got out to former skipper Gulbadin Naib. At 63/2, the likes of Shanto and Miraj put together 194 runs for the third wicket.

Both batters scored a hundred and the latter retired hurt after scoring 112 runs. On the other hand, Shanto scored 104 runs and got run out. Thanks to their efforts and cameos from Mushfiqur Rahim (25) and Shakib Al Hasan (32) the team reached a competitive 334/5. In reply, the Blue Brigade, they have reached 50/1 in 13 overs. In form, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (1) was trapped lbw by Shoriful Islam.

Najmul Hossain Shanto shone against Sri Lanka too

The left-hander was the lone warrior in the lost game against the defending champions, Sri Lanka. In that game, the Shakib Al Hasan-led side was bowled out for 164 runs. In that game, Shanto scored 89 runs and was the only player to do well against a lethal Lankan attack.

Even though Bangladesh took five wickets, it wasn't enough as they were defending a low total. They ended up losing the game by five wickets. If Bangladesh wins this game, the Super Four qualification race in Group B will intensify between three teams such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. If the Afghans manage to chase down a record total, they will eliminate Bangladesh and qualify for the next round.
