After a month-long break, Team India will return to action on July 12 with a tour of the West Indies that will include two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is. While the Test series will kick off the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle, the ODI series will be crucial preparation for the Men in Blue as the Asia Cup and World Cup approaches. The senior players have been given a break from the 20-over series so that the youngsters can showcase their talent in overseas conditions.

Meanwhile, ahead of the upcoming major tournaments, there is some good news for India. One of the most reliable middle-order batters in ODIs for India, Shreyas Iyer has started training in the nets. Following a back injury he had to undergo surgery which kept him away from several matches for India as well as for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

The right-handed batter is currently rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Recently, there were reports that he may not recover in time for the 2023 Asia Cup. “Iyer recently took an injection for his back pain at the Indian Cricket Board’s National Cricket Academy. His back is still giving him trouble,” a source told The Times of India last month.

However, pictures and videos of Iyer batting in the nets have been doing the rounds on social media and Indian fans are hoping that he will be ready for the upcoming tournaments. A fan posted the video on Twitter with the caption: "Latest reports have claimed that Shreyas Iyer will be 100% fit for the World Cup. He might play in the Asia Cup as well."

Can Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson shine against West Indies?

Meanwhile, the 28-year-old has not been named in the upcoming West Indies tour. With Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant out of the series, all eyes will be on Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson. While SKY takes the spot of Iyer, Samson will probably get the nod to stand behind the stumps. It will be a great opportunity for both to prove their mettle in a 50-over format ahead of the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup.
