England Test captain Ben Stokes has put an end to any speculation around his return to ODIs. He has confirmed that he remains retired from the format and has no plans to reverse his decision. He recently faced heartbreak last week when the fourth Ashes Test was washed out in Manchester, letting Australia retain the Ashes.

England’s next Test assignment after the Ashes 2023 is the series in India in January 2024. Stokes wants to use this free time to work on his knee problem that has restricted his bowling. Regardless, England will be looking to conclude the series on a high note when both the teams return to The Oval for the last Test of the series; however, their captain Stokes made a statement that, while expected, will be a letdown for England supporters.

I am retired: Ben Stokes

In recent months, speculations in the English media claimed that Stokes would reconsider his ODI retirement and make himself eligible for selection in the 2023 World Cup, which will be held in India. Stokes said after he was asked if he could play at the 2023 ODI World Cup,  "I am retired." “ is something I want to get sorted. is a good time to have some serious in-depth conversations about what is potentially something I could do where I can bowl without worrying about my knee."

"Those are conversations we will be able to have during that good time off. is something I have done since I was a kid. Wanting to be involved in the game is something that has got the best out of me. It has been frustrating not being able to have the same impact and play the same role I have done for the last 10 years. Hopefully, I can get my knee sorted."
