Mumbai Indians played Gujarat Giants in the 35th match of the Indian Premier League 2023 after losing a close battle against Punjab Kings. Hardik Pandya and his team dominated in all three departments, making the contest exceedingly one-sided.
After winning the toss, MI elected to bowl first on a pitch that appeared to be suitable for batting at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Despite losing Wriddhiman Saha early on, GT had a great start as Shubman Gill, along with Pandya, put on a solid partnership in the powerplay.
The two led the team to a score of 50 in the first six overs, but the skipper lost his wicket immediately after that. Gill, on the other hand, continued his onslaught and completed yet another half-century (56 runs in 34 balls) in the season.
David Miller (46 runs in 22 balls) and Abhinav Manohar (42 runs in 21 balls) led the charge to score runs in the middle overs. They faced the MI spinners well and put on a stunning 71-run partnership for the 5th wicket. In the end, Rahul Tewatia played a vital cameo of 20 runs in just 5 balls to propel his team above the 200-run mark. In their allocated 20 overs, the Titans scored 207/6.
Mumbai Indians crumble in their chase
The five-time champions needed a good start to chase the massive target, but early swing from Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya put them on the back foot. Following Rohit Sharma's early wicket, Cameron Green and Ishan Kishan played a few good strokes, but the spark faded quickly.
Wickets kept falling for the Men in Blue, and half of their side was back to the dugout for a team score of 59 runs. Only Nehal Wadher's 40-run knock in 21 balls looked dangerous against Gujarat's formidable bowling arsenal. However, it came in near the conclusion of the innings, when it was too late for MI to recover.
In the end, they were limited to a score of 152/5, giving Gujarat Titans a 55-run victory. With his 3-wicket spell, Noor Ahmed was the pick of the GT bowlers. Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma each claimed two wickets, while Pandya only took one.
