South Africa vs India 1st Test is currently underway at the Supersport Park, Centurion. The Men in Blue eye for a historic feat against the Proteas as they will aim to win their first Test series in the Rainbow nation. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first on a green wicket. Rohit Sharma's side was in trouble with 24/3 at one stage but was able to manage up with KL Rahul scoring a brilliant hundred and helping India post 245 runs in the first innings.
During the Test match, Sunil Gavaskar brought back, veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane's innings 5 years ago at Johannesburg, and how well the batter handled the tricky wicket where other batters seemed to have problems. Rahane was not included in the recent test side for the South Africa tour.
He made a comeback to the team for the World Test Championship final 2023 against Australia and was the highest run scorer for the side as well. The 35-year-old batter remains one of India's finest overseas players. But, the last couple of years have seen him lose his spot in the Indian Test team. He still has the potential to perform in the longest format of the game.
People have been talking about the pitch in the Johannesburg Test five years back: Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar said, "People have been talking about the pitch in the Johannesburg Test five years back and I was there. Yeah it wasn't the easiest of pitches to bat on the odd ball was climbing up. And Ajinkya Rahane, who had not been picked for the first two Test matches, was picked for that game and he showed what the Indian team had missed because earlier on in the first couple of Test matches India did not lose by big margins.
"So maybe somebody with Rahane's experience overseas... because Rahane overseas has been such a fine, fine player and maybe if he had been there today the story could have been completely different."
