The Indian Premier League 2023 has been the talk of the town in the past couple of weeks as it has provided some nail-biting matches. From Rinku Singh getting Kolkata Knight Riders home with five consecutive sixes to last-ball thrillers in Lucknow Super Giants vs Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians encounter, the tournament has been no short of a thriller movie.

However, Sunil Gavaskar, former India captain and batting legend, has yet to find any 'exciting young talent' in the first few matches of the season. Gavaskar, who is also a member of Star Sports' English commentary team, believes that the IPL 2023 has fallen short of expectations.

There seems to be a dearth of talent: Sunil Gavaskar

In his most recent column for Sportstar, he claimed that the tournament had failed to live up to its motto, "Where Talent Meets Opportunity." He discovered a scarcity of exciting young players and does not expect that to change throughout the season.

“…unless there are some hidden gems yet to be unearthed, the fast bowling department, the opening batting and spin bowling sections are looking devoid of any exciting talent,” Gavaskar wrote.

“In the bowling department, too, there seems to be a dearth of talent. While it is understandable that the T20 format is very harsh on the bowlers, the lack of much planning and thought when the batter gets stuck into them is a concern. The spinners hardly ever change the pace at which they deliver and by bowling flatter they seem like medium pacers, which is exactly what the batters are looking for,” he further mentioned.

In the meantime, Mumbai Indians won their first match of the season on Tuesday, defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by six wickets. DC is a young-driven team that is currently having a disappointing season. They have lost four games in a row, their second-worst IPL streak after six straight losses in 2013. On the other hand, KL Rahul-led LSG is at the top of the points table with three wins in the four games that they have played so far.
