The Australian Cricket Team is in India in a bid to win their sixth ODI Cricket World Cup. Pat Cummins has already led his side to a global title win with the World Test title in June this year. If the Australians win the 2023 ODI World Cup, it will cement their place as one of the greatest teams.
The first opponents for the Australian team are their familiar foes. India and Australia will lock horns this Sunday the 8th of October in Chennai. Both the teams have just played each other in a three-match-ODI series.
Here we take a closer look at the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats faced by the Australian Cricket Team:
Strengths – Overall makeup of the Australian side
David Warner and Mitchell Marsh as the openers will send a chill down the spine of any team. The two batters have been given the freedom to express themselves during the 2023 ODI World Cup. With Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in the XI, the Australians have their bases covered.
Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green, and Sean Abbott provide the all-round capabilities. Mitchell Marsh too can chip in with a few overs and is known to be a deceptive bowler.
The fast bowling department has always been a key for any Australian side. This year as well it is no different. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood are the best trio going around in world cricket right now.
Weakness – lack of a second spinner
Adam Zampa will be the frontline spinner for the Australian team during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The injury to Ashton Agar could come back to haunt the Australian side. Glenn Maxwell recently picked 4 wickets during the Rajkot ODI. The 34-year-old though cannot be counted to be the backup to Adam Zampa. The Australians could have picked someone like Tanveer Sangha or Todd Murphy to strengthen their spin resources.
Opportunities – Chance to create a new era of dominance
Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, and Michael Clarke were the captains when Australia won the ODI World Cups. Pat Cummins was a key member of the side during the 2015 World Cup title win under Michael Clarke. The 30-year-old has a chance to write his name in history books if he happens to win the 2023 ODI World Cup. This could start another chapter of Australian dominance in cricket.
Threats – Injury-prone players
One of the biggest threats faced by Australia during the 2023 ODI World Cup is injuries. Glenn Maxwell is coming off a long injury lay-off, and so is Mitchell Starc. Pat Cummins himself is just back after a few niggles. The likes of Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood, and Cameron Green had missed a few games recently. Mitchell Marsh has had a long list of injuries which has seen him miss many games for the Australian side.
