India and Australia clashed against each other in the final match of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 at the Oval which took place between June 7 and 11. India qualified for the 2nd consecutive time in the WTC final but suffered losses in both matches. In 2021, they were beaten by New Zealand, and in 2023, they got defeated by the Kangaroos.

Talking about the match, India won the toss and opted to bat first, however, their decision proved wrong as Australia scored a monument total of 469 runs in the first innings with the help of brilliant centuries by Steve Smith and Travis Head. They both also stitched a beautiful partnership of 285-run stand for the 4th wicket.

A brilliant all-round performance by Australia

Coming to bat, the Indian batting lineup failed miserably in front of the Australian speedsters except for Ravindra Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shardul Thakur, who helped the team to score 296 runs in India’s 1st innings. Rahane also became the first Indian to hit a half-century in a WTC final.

Australia came back to bat in the 2nd innings with a lead of 173 runs, however, this time Indian bowlers performed better as they dismissed 5 Australian batters on the score of 124 runs, but Australia’s lower-order batters stepped up and contributed some crucial runs on the scoreboard, especially Alex Carey, who played and unbeaten 66-run knock and helped the team set a target of 444 runs against India.

Chasing the target, India got off to a brilliant start, provided by openers Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma but both of them failed to convert it into a big score. Cheteshwar Pujara also departed after scoring 27 runs, however, later, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane steadied the ship and stitched an 86-run stand for the 4th wicket. But India couldn’t really do anything on Day 5 and lost their last 7 wickets on just 55 runs and lost the match by 209 runs. Australia has led this Test and is rightly crowned the best red ball team in the world.
