In a surprising turn of events, Gujarat Titans beat Lucknow Super Giants by a margin of 7 runs in their Indian Premier League 2023 clash. In what looked to be a comfortable target to chase down, LSG faltered towards the back end and gave away the match at their home ground.

After winning the toss, Hardik Pandya chose to bat first, which was a wise decision given the slowness of the pitch and the fact that it was a day game. The pitch was quite slow, and dew did not play a significant role in the day game.

The defending champions lost an early wicket in Shubman Gill, but Pandya, who promoted himself in the batting order, and Wriddhiman Saha stabilized the innings afterwards. They added 68 runs in the partnership and managed to tackle spin really well. After Saha's wicket (47 runs in 37 balls), Pandya (66 runs in 50 balls) continued to cruise along.

Gujarat, however, misunderstood the pitch to some extent and went completely defensive. They were unable to increase their strike rate and finished the first innings with a score of 135/6. For Lucknow, Krunal Pandya and Marcus SToinis did most of the work, picking two wickets each. Naveen ul Haq and Amit Mishra also took a wicket each.

KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers played some crisp strokes to get LSG off to a good start in the chase. They guided the team to a score of 53 runs for no loss in the powerplay. Mayers, however, lost his wicket immediately after that.

LSG's dramatic downfall

The captain maintained his momentum, but his strike rate fell slightly as he put on a 51-run partnership with Krunal. After Krunal's wicket in the 15th over, it was all downhill for LSG. They needed 30 runs needed in 30 balls, with the skipper well set in the middle.

GT kept their cool superbly, conceding 3,4,6, and 5 runs in the next four overs. Hardik handed the ball to Mohit Sharma for the last over with 12 runs to defend, and in a dramatic turn of events, he was exceptional.

The pacer produced four wickets in the over, including that of Rahul (68 runs in 61 balls). Mohit's four wickets included two runouts as he only allowed four runs and guided his team to win the match. He was rightly awarded the Player of the Match for his exceptional final over.
