Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings put on a run-fest in the 31st encounter of the Indian Premier League 2023 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. With over 400 runs scored in the match, there was never a dull moment in the 40 overs bowled.

After winning the toss, MI invited PBKS to bat first on a wicket that appeared to be ideal for batting. Following Matthew Short's early dismissal, Punjab fought back to score 58 runs in the powerplay, thanks to Prabhsimran Singh's quickfire knock.

After that, the 2014 finalists lost a string of wickets in the middle overs that put pressure back on them. However, stand-in captain Sam Curran and Harpreet Singh worked together to complete the task for their squad. The two added 92 runs for the 5th wicket partnership, with Harpreet scoring 41 runs in 28 balls.

PBKS set the stage on fire with 109 runs scored in the last six overs to reach 214/8 in their 20 overs. For Mumbai, Cameron Green and Piyush Chawla took two wickets each, while Arjun Tendulkar, Jason Behrendorff, and Jofra Archer all took one.

While the Men in Blue lost an early wicket in the chase, Rohit Sharma and Green batted beautifully to keep their hopes alive. Both looked in fine touch as they dealt in boundaries. They added 76 runs for the second-wicket partnership before the skipper, who looked in great touch, lost his wicket after scoring 44 runs in 27 balls.

Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav set the stage on fire

Suryakumar Yadav subsequently joined the party, and for the first time in a long time, he appeared to be his original self. He led the charge with big runs alongside Green. The two managed to get 75 runs in just 36 balls for the third-wicket partnership.

Green, having scored 67 runs in 43 balls, fell to Nathan Ellis in the 16th over, and Yadav (57 runs in just 26 balls) followed soon. With Tim David and Tilak Varma in the middle, Mumbai now needed 33 runs to win in 14 balls.

While David looked to take away the game from the visitors, Punjab held their nerves. Arshdeep Singh bowled the last over with 16 runs to defend. The 24-year-old was on song, conceding only two runs and breaking two middle stumps to take two wickets in the final over. Thanks to Arshdeep Singh's brilliance, PBKS defeated MI by 14 runs.
