Virat Kohli became the first player to set a historical record in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 while playing for RCB vs DC. When he scored 12 runs in New Delhi, the former RCB captain became the first player to score 7000 runs in the IPL.

Ahead of this game, Kohli, who has also been on a roll this season, was sixth in the race for the IPL 2023 Orange Cap with 375 runs in 10 matches at an average of 45.50 and 137.87 strike rate. With 6988 runs in 233 games before this game, he was already the leading run-scorer in IPL history. Kohli has also amassed five centuries and 49 fifties during his IPL career. He scored the first 6000 runs in IPL history in 2021 and surpassed 5000 runs in the competition for the second time in 2019 (behind Suresh Raina).

Shikhar Dhawan follows Virat Kohli in the list of all-time highest run-scorers in IPL

The difference between Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan in the all-time run table makes him dominant in the IPL. The DC captain David Warner (6189), is in third place behind the PBKS captain with 6536 runs in 213 games. Rohit Sharma, the MI captain, is currently in fourth place with 6063 runs.

Despite Kohli's 973 runs scored while serving as captain, RCB fell to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2016 final game. Kohli's performance in the 2017 IPL was his worst yet, scoring 341 runs at an average of 22.73 in 16 games. But he quickly regained his form in the Asia Cup, finishing the previous year's T20 World Cup with the most runs scored.

RCB has been very inconsistent this year, and despite Kohli's strong play, they are fifth in the standings with 10 points after nine games that included five victories and four losses. Regarding the ongoing match, RCB are closing out on a competitive 181/4 from their 20 overs. Virat Kohli's half-century was further helped by a quickfire fifty by Mahipal Lomror (54 off 29) and skipper Faf du Plessis (45 off 32) to push the team total to the 180-run mark.
