Indian cricket team had to face a lot of criticism after their embarrassing 209-run loss against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final at the Oval on Sunday, June 11. The last time India won any major world trophy was in 2013 when they defeated England to win the Champions Trophy under former legendary India captain MS Dhoni. However, it’s been 10 years since India won the last big tournament.
The Men in Blue are still getting criticised by the fans and cricket pundits. Meanwhile, former legendary West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts has also taken a dig at Indian players. He accused them of being arrogant and overconfident and said that are unable to set their priority between international cricket and the Indian Premier League.
"There is this arrogance which has crept into Indian cricket and through this, India has underestimated the rest of the world. India must decide what their focus is—Test cricket or limited overs cricket. T20 cricket will run its course. There is no contest between bat and ball there," Roberts was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
They have not performed creditably away from home: Andy Roberts
Roberts talked about Indian batters and highlighted their weakness during the WTC final. The Caribbean legend said that he was expecting a great show from Indian batters but he was left disappointed. However, he praised Ajinkya Rahane for his outstanding knocks in both 1st and 2nd innings respectively that too after getting multiple blows on his hands.
"I expected India to show their batting strength. I saw no bright spot in the final although Ajinkya Rahane fought hard; got hit on his hand. Shubman Gill looks good when he plays those shots, but he stands on the leg stump and is often dismissed bowled or caught behind. He has good hands, but he must get behind the ball. Virat Kohli, though, got a brute of a delivery from Mitchell Starc in the first innings. India have some very good players mind you, but they have not performed creditably away from home," he said.
