Mumbai Indians fans were rocked with massive news on Friday as Hardik Pandya was named as the new skipper of the side replacing Rohit Sharma. The news came out of the blue as many fans were expecting Rohit Sharma to be captain for the upcoming season.
It is to be noted that Hardik Pandya was the captain of Gujarat Titans for two years since their league debut. In his very first season, Hardik Pandya led his side to the IPL title in 2022. This year Gujarat Titans went all the way to the final before losing to Chennai Super Kings.
Ahead of the release and retention reveal it came to light that Mumbai Indians were trying to re-acquire Hardik Pandya. Despite being retained by his franchise on 26th November, the trade took place a few hours later. The five-time IPL winners had got their former star back for a whopping INR 15 Crores.
Mahela Jayawardene reveals the reason behind the change
Former Sri Lankan legend, Mahela Jayawardene revealed the reason behind Hardik Pandya being named the MI skipper. Serving as the Global Head for Performance for the men in blue and gold the former Lankan hinted at a succession plan being put into action.
Mahela Jayawardene as quoted by CRICBUZZ said “It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is keeping in mind with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season”.
Rohit Sharma took over captaincy from Ricky Ponting in the middle of the IPL 2013 season. When he took over the team was nowhere near the top of the table but Rohit turned the season around. Mumbai Indians won their first-ever IPL title beating Chennai Super Kings in the final. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the MI team went on to become a formidable team winning 4 more IPL titles and 1 Champions League title.
Mahela Jayawardene further said “We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership. His tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His leadership not only brought success to the team but also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in IPL history”
The 48-year-old finished by saying “Under his guidance, MI became one of the most successful and loved teams ever. We will look forward to his guidance on and off the field to further strengthen MI. We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new skipper of MI and wish him all the very best for the future”
