Punjab Kings (PBKS) have kept themselves alive in the IPL 2023 after defeating Delhi Capitals (DC) by 31 runs in Match 59 of the season at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday. Meanwhile, DC are officially out of the Playoffs race as they suffered their eighth defeat of the season in 12 matches. Batting first, PBKS posted a total of 167 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, powered by the maiden IPL century by Prabhsimran Singh. In reply, DC were restricted to 136 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

PBKS didn’t have a great start as they lost their skipper Shikhar Dhawan for 10 runs in the second over of the match after he decided to take on Ishant Sharma but ended up giving a catch to Rilee Rossouw at deep mid-wicket. A couple of overs later, Ishant struck again as he bowled out Liam Livingstone at a score of 32 runs. In the next over, PBKS suffered a third blow as Axar Patel cleared Jitesh Sharma’s stumps at the 45 runs.

After that, Prabhsimran added 72 runs with Sam Curran for the fourth wicket. Curran got out after playing a slow knock of 20 runs off 24 balls. While Prabhsimran took the innings further with wickets falling regularly from the other end. He finally got out in the second ball of the 19th over after scoring 103 runs off 65 balls hitting 10 fours and six sixes. For DC, Ishant Sharma scalped 2 wickets by conceding 27 runs in his three overs. Meanwhile, Axar Patel, Praveen Dubey, Kuldeep Yadav and Mukesh Kumar shared a wicket each.

DC lost momentum after an aggressive start

Chasing the winning total, DC had a flying start as the skipper David Warner and Phil Salt added 69 runs for the first wicket in 6.2 overs. After that, DC’s innings collapsed as they lost wickets regularly and the score was reduced to 88 for 6 in 10.1 overs. Phil Salt got out after scoring 21 runs off 17 balls hitting three boundaries. While Warner went on to score his fourth half-century of the season as he got out after smashing 54 runs off 27 balls with 10 fours and a maximum.

However, none of the other batters could score big as DC fell short of 31 runs from PBKS’ total despite a good start. For PBKS, Harpreet Brar took 4 wickets by conceding 30 runs in his four overs. While Rahul Chahar and Nathan Ellis took 2-2 wickets each. With this win, PBKS jumped to the sixth position in the points table, while DC remain at the 10th spot.
