Will Dhoni lead Chennai to another title?
Dhoni has been the captain of the Chennai Franchise since 2008. Between 2016 and 2018, Chennai was banned for two years, therefore the franchise has played in 13 Indian T20 League seasons, qualifying 11 times for the playoffs, and winning the title four times. Since the first season, he has been the franchise's face and, of course, the most popular captain of all time.
The adored "Thala" of Chennai supporters turned 41 this year, and we may see him play in the cash-rich league for the final time in 2023. He stood aside as captain before the start of the 2022 season in order to nurture Ravindra Jadeja as the next captain. But the team did not perform well under Jadeja’s captaincy, therefore Dhoni reclaimed the reins in the middle of the season.
Chennai now need a captain who can commit to the team for at least the next five seasons. Maharashtra opener and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is likely to be given the task to lead. The youthful Chennai star has already established himself as a key component of the franchise's core group. For the past few seasons, Gaikwad has been the team’s most reliable player. In the 2021 season, when the Men in Yellow won their fourth IPL title, he was also awarded the Orange Cap. Because of his promising performance in the major T20 league, he is considered the future of Indian cricket as well.
