The UEFA Champions League 2023/24 season has started in a grand fashion. With top European teams clash against each other for the most prestigious club trophy. On Tuesday, midnight defending champions Manchester City played Red Star Belgrade. They won 3-1 against the Serbian club.

In another match between Lazio and Atletico Madrid, a late equalizer from Lazio's goalkeeper Ivan Provedel snatched a point from the mouth of defeat. The shot-stopper ran up to the Atletico Madrid box in a desperate attempt to rescue a draw in their opening game of the competition.

Ivan Provedel stars for Lazio

Lazio had a corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and the ball eventually went to Luis Alberto on the edge of the penalty area. He sent the ball inside the box, and goalkeeper Ivan Provedel made the necessary run to the six-yard box. Provedel quickly glanced the ball into the back of the net, securing a 1-1 draw with the final play of the game.

It is also the first goalkeeper in the Champions League since Vincent Enyeama's goal for Hapoel Tel Aviv against Lyon in 2010. He became the second goalkeeper to score in open play in the Champions League. The goalkeeper added at the last, "It’s a great feeling and I’ve still not come to terms with it. The most difficult thing it was dodging the slaps at the end, luckily Luis Alberto kicked it there."

Lazio and Atleti each start their Champions League campaign with one point in Group E. Feyenoord currently sit top of the group with three points after they won 2-0 over a nine-man Celtic. Lazio’s next Champions League clash will be at Celtic on Oct. 4.

In other matches, FC Barcelona scored five past Royal Antwerp, as Joao Felix scored a brace. Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez also scored a brace in their 3-1 win. Paris-Saint Germain won against Borussia Dortmund 2-0. Porto defeated Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 away in the other Group H game. AC Milan was held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle in the other Group F game.
