Dubai Capitals started the tournament with a win

The tournament kicked off on Friday, January 13. In the first match, Dubai Capitals clashed with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. Knight Riders won the toss and opted to bowl first. The capitals started slowly as they went for almost a run a ball in the powerplay, and ended up losing Joe Root as well who holed out to deep square leg. His opening partner Robin Uthappa scored 43 runs but didn’t score them at the expected T20 standard strike rate.

Skipper, Rovman Powell was looking prime for a big score but he got out after scoring 48 runs off just 29 balls. However, his absence was never really felt though as Sikandar Raza switched gears to attack the Abu Dhabi team in those death overs and the Capitals ended up scoring 187 runs.

Chasing the target, Knight Riders started badly as none apart from Paul Stirling got to double digits in the top order for the Knight Riders. In fact, only two of them got to double digits. Powell, with the ball, got the key wicket of Stirling, too, and finished with two wickets.

It was definitely a chasable target but the Knight Riders didn't apply themselves. Mujeeb ur Rahman, Raza, and Isuru Udana led the show with some tight bowling and the Capitals won the match by 73 runs. Meanwhile, MI Emirates will lock horns with Sharjah Warriors in the second match of the tournament.
