The Indian cricket team won the Champions Trophy after defeating England in a thrilling last-ball final in 2013. However, it’s been 10 years since then and the Indian team have failed to win another major title multiple times after the Champions Trophy 2013 win. Former legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni also achieved the personal milestone and became the only captain to win all 3 major titles.

Talking about the match, England won the toss and opted to bowl first. The match was already affected by the rain and the game was reduced to just 20 overs each for both sides. India managed to score only 129 runs in the first innings, thanks to Virat Kohli’s 43-run knock which came off 34 deliveries. England’s allrounder Ravi Bopara was the star with the ball for the English team as he picked 3 wickets while conceding only 20 runs.

Chasing the target, England’s batters also find it hard to score runs in the overcast conditions and were restricted to the score of just 124 runs. The three Lions needed 6 runs in the last over but Ravichandran Ashwin bowled a beautiful off-spin delivery and James Tredwell couldn’t even touch it.

It’s a tough pill to swallow at the moment: Alastair Cook

Meanwhile, the then-England captain, Alastair Cook talked about the disappointing loss and said that it’s very hard to believe that they lost the match from a winning situation. However, he also mentioned how the game changes in the shortest format.

“It’s a tough pill to swallow at the moment. We had high hopes coming in today of achieving something special. Clearly from there you would back yourself to win more times than you would lose in that situation, but it shows how quickly games can change in Twenty20 when you lose a couple of wickets.

We got close. I’m proud of the way the lads have fought from being under a fair bit of pressure in this tournament. Quite a lot of criticism and flak has been thrown our way and yet we got to the final and played some good cricket. We just couldn’t quite get over the line.” Cook was quoted by the Independent.
