Tamim Iqbal is one of the torch-bearers of Bangladesh cricket and one of their best batters of all time. Tamim, who is currently serving as the captain of Bangladesh, announced his unexpected retirement from international cricket on Thursday. The choice was made one day after Bangladesh's first ODI loss to Afghanistan and three months before the World Cup in India.

Upon announcing their retirement from International Cricket in an emotional press conference, the star left-hand batter was seen breaking down into tears as called an end to his 16 years of an illustrious career. Arguably the best batter in the history of Bangladesh also backs up with the numbers that he had throughout his career. Iqbal is Bangladesh’s most successful batter with 8313 runs to his name from 241 ODIs with an astonishing average of 36.67 including 14 centuries as well as 56 fifties.

Tamim's decision to retire from ODIs and Tests comes almost a year after he announced his retirement from T20Is on June 17, 2022. In Tests, Tamim is next only to Mushfiqur Rahim with 5134 runs. His sudden retirement has no confirmed cause, however, it is thought that his alleged argument with Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha and BCB president Nazmul Hossain contributed.

Unconfirmed rumours suggest that Tamim's action has incensed Nazmul, who will speak with the captain about it. However, Tamim is currently retired until and unless the conversation takes place. Although Bangladesh hasn't yet named a replacement, Shakib-Al-Hasan or Litton Das, who led the squad in T20Is and Tests, respectively, are the most likely candidates.

"This is the end for me. I have given my best. I have tried my best. I am retiring from international cricket at this moment. Yesterday against Afghanistan was my last international game. I am retiring from international cricket effective right now. It was not a sudden decision. I was thinking about the different reasons. I don't want to mention it here. I have spoken to my family members about it. I thought this is the right time for me to retire from international cricket," Tamim said as he broke down.
