India suffered an embarrassing 209-run loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final on June 11 at The Oval against Australia. The Men in Blue qualified for the second consecutive time in the WTC final but could not manage to win in any of them. They were defeated by New Zealand in the 2019-21 edition.
Meanwhile, Indian opener Shubman Gill was fined 15% of his match fee for criticising the 3rd umpire’s decision on social media. During the 2nd innings of the match, Gill was involved in a controversial dismissal after which he took to Twitter and shared a screenshot of his dismissal and it was visible that he was trying to take a dig at the umpire’s decision. The apex cricket body released a statement regarding Gill’s fine.
“India's Shubman Gill will also face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment about an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee,” a source was quoted as saying by Zee News.
“Television umpire Richard Kettleborough adjudged that a catch by Cameron Green to remove Gill had been taken cleanly. Gill took to social media later in the day to make a post that appeared to question the decision. And it was confirmed shortly after the conclusion of the match on Sunday’s final day that India will lose all of their match fees for their slow over rate, with Australia also docked 80 per cent of their match fees,” the source said.
Gill failed to perform in the WTC final
The statement further added in it was said that Gill was found to have breached Article 2.7. One demerit point was also added to Gill’s record. Talking about Gill’s performance in the WTC final, the 23-year-old was expected to perform well in the major contest but that didn’t happen as he was only able to score 13 and 18 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings respectively.
“Gill was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the cricket governing body Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'public criticism of, or inappropriate comment about an incident occurring in an international match'. In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Gill’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period,” the release added.
