Australia's star batsman Steve Smith grabbed headlines on Saturday after he scored a blistering century for Sydney Sixers in their Big Bash League (BBL) 2022-23 match against Sydney Thunder. This is Steve Smith's second consecutive century in this tournament. In the previous match, he scored 101 runs in 56 balls against the Adelaide Strikers.
The 50th match of the Big Bash League was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where Smith thrashed the opposition bowlers and hit 125 runs off 66 balls. Smith hit nine sixes and five fours in the innings. He was also named Player of the Match.
The right-handed batter has played just three matches so far, in which he has scored 261 runs at an average of 131 and a strike rate of 175.83. Interestingly, Smith has become the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament for the Sydney Sixers after playing just three matches. Smith has hit 14 fours and 18 sixes.
Comprehensive win for Sydney Sixers
Sixers won the match by a huge margin of 125 runs and this win means that the Sixers are now breathing down the Scorchers' neck at the top of the table. If both teams win their last game, the Scorchers will finish at the top of the points table. But if they drop points, the Sixers look more primed than ever to pounce.
Smith also left behind India's legendary player Yuvraj Singh due to his terrific form. Smith has scored 4,941 runs in T20s so far. He scored these runs in 237 matches. The right has smashed two centuries and 21 half-centuries. On the other hand, Yuvraj has 4,857 runs in the shortest format in 231 matches.
Meanwhile, Smith will be seen playing county cricket for England in May this year. He has signed a short three-match contract with Sussex Cricket. India’s test batter Cheteshwar Pujara will also be seen playing for the same team. He has already played for Sussex. This is not the first time Smith will be playing county cricket in England. Prior to this, he has played county cricket for Surrey.
